John Andrew Jackson was born a slave on a plantation in Sumter County, South Carolina, and escaped slavery in 1846; he published The Experience of a Slave in South Carolina in 1862 to educate his readership on the often unspoken horrors of slavery. The book would be going along fine and then there would be a section with hit-you-over-the-head “this is what you must learn from what you are reading” preaching (religious and political). Great book to read and open the doors for much more blessing in your life.

Excellent, the first part of the book seemed a bit forced, but once the author began speaking in her own voice it really took off. I felt the authors life somewhat paralleled my mother's life as they are of the same generation. I gave my mom a copy ...
